One thing I’d like my pictures to do is not make people feel guilty, but help them appreciate what they have. I hope my pictures give a voice to the ordinary people caught in the middle of the strife. In this line of work, you have to be uncompromising. I push it pretty far. I take myself to places most people are not able to, both mentally and physically. When I return to America, my psyche comes back in stages.
Critics say that I have my career off the suffering of others, but in the majority of cases, people welcome me to take pictures. They know the world will see them, and this gives them hope. The source of my images is life itself.
Although I do not view them as such, my pictures have been regarded as beautiful pieces of artwork. My photos reiterate the fact that great art expresses pain and beauty. Suffering and pain and beauty coexist.
